Stoff für den Shutdown

Stoff für den Shutdown is a print magazine born out of the lockdown, bringing together stories from freelance cultural workers reflecting on their experiences during the crisis. Co-published by our team, the magazine features contributions from around 30 authors in each issue, alongside work from artists and photographers like Yves Netzhammer, Anne Morgenstern, Meinrad Schade, and Dan Cermak.

In the early stages, we designed a simple layout system, keeping it practical and adaptable with a folded A4 format and colored paper. Working with a local printer ensured smooth logistics, avoiding customs and other delivery challenges. To break up the rhythm of the pages, we incorporated large quotes set in our early-stage Futter Grotesk, styled like warning signs, giving the pages a dynamic and urgent feel. Each issue also had a unique color and icon on the back, symbolizing the evolving alert status of the shutdown.

The project was a huge success, allowing us to produce three issues, each within just one week of design and layout before going to print and being delivered directly to crowdfunding supporters. The project not only helped foster a sense of community during the crisis but also enabled us to provide a small salary to the authors.

The concept was quickly developed within 48 hours, showcasing the collective effort to respond to a world in crisis through the power of storytelling and design.
